It was a bet with his girlfriend that got Johnny Nieves off the couch and into the SweatBox studio. “As all great things begin, I made a bet with my girlfriend to see who would be fitter by her birthday, which was six weeks away at the time,” he says.
That was back in July. Now, less than three months later, Johnny has seen some serious results: He’s lost more than 6 percent body fat and burns about 1000 calories each workout. The intense, full body sweat sessions — combined with our top-notch, expert instructors — keep him coming back. We reached out to Johnny to learn more about his fitness journey, how often he goes to class, and his advice for anyone who’s curious about giving SweatBox a try.
When did you begin taking SweatBox classes and what made you start?
I have been wanting to restart my fitness journey for quite some time. But I was hesitant to join a gym due to my lackluster motivation. So as all great things begin, I made a bet with my girlfriend to see who would be fitter by her birthday.
Have you always been a gym goer?
Not until recently. When I moved from Florida to New Jersey when I was 21, I started going to the gym every day for two to three hours. I weighed 135 lbs and within three months, I gained 40 lbs. I was the fittest I’ve ever been, which lasted a good two years or so. I’ve played basketball frequently throughout my life, and football for a few years in middle and high school.
When you started SweatBox, what were your initial goals?
My initial goal was weight loss. I’ve since lost a little more than 6 percent body fat. The intense full body workouts have helped me burn about 1000 calories per workout.
How often do you come to class?
Currently 5 to 6 times a week. I enjoy the full body cardio blasts associated with the classes, which has helped me reach my weight loss goals.
What do you most enjoy about SweatBox?
The instructors — they continue to help push me further to surpass my limits.
What would you tell someone who’s on the fence about trying SweatBox?
Sign up for the two-week trial — the price is great, so take advantage of it. The hardest thing is getting to the gym. Once you’re there, you forget about the nuances that may have prevented you from going in the first place.
Besides hitting up SweatBox classes, how do you spend your time?
I tend to travel a lot. Last year I was away every month and visited eight countries. This year has been a bit slower, but I’m looking to kick start things again. My next trip is next month, and I’ll be going to the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.
If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go?
For a long time my goal was to visit Japan, but I went there last year. So I’d have to say now it’s Colombia or Brazil — those cultures have always fascinated me.
Describe your idea of the perfect day.
The perfect day for me would be on the beach or exploring the rainforest in Costa Rica, which is one of my favorite destinations.
